Just a Bite v1.70 is Available Now!

One more Halloween, one more release of Cuddle Kobold: Just a Bite! This one has lots of enhancements carried over from the Android release and a bunch beyond that. It should run much better on all platforms, although Quest 2 standalone (and obviously Quest 1) may struggle with certain shader effects and the mirrors. That's why there's options to turn off the Cosmetics (button in the closet), turn off the Ornaments (click the star at the top of the tree), and the Mirror of course. And the Supporter Hat will never appear on the Kobold at the start of the scene. So hopefully no performance surprises you won't be prepared for.

As you may have noticed, I have a tendency to "one more thing" my work to infinity and back, but I can say pretty confidently this will be the last major update of Just a Bite. (If I have to make compatibility fixes etc. I may still of course.) Of course this doesn't mean the end of Cuddle Kobold! On the contrary, it means I can start up work on a new spin-off game I've been wanting to talk about for months, and start properly framing out the full, real Cuddle Kobold soon thereafter.

As a little extra, Patreon Supporters ( https://www.patreon.com/setsune ) get a special bonus! They get to play Version 1.69, because Funny Number. They also get a special cosmetic for their contribution, and it might even have a mysterious effect! So if your reaction to this news is this, then sign up for the Patreon and get your copy from there! And consider sticking around, because Patron rewards are about to get bigger and better in the near future!

But for everyone, let's look at the changes:

v1.70 Release (2022/10/31)

  • Quest 2/Pro Port (available as separate APK, and v1.68 on App Lab)
  • Optimization, including reducing heavy polygon-count items, unnecessarily complex materials, and unneeded processing overhead. Removed unused objects. New occlusion culling tool implemented.
  • New Decorations, including new snacks, wall clock, TV remote (which can turn on/off the TV screen), an improved Mirror, wall paint, and more. Nighttime now matches Daytime's decorations, with a few intentional exceptions.
  • Altered lighting in some areas for improved visibility.
  • Fixed several graphical glitches, altered some wall and furniture alignments for better consistency.
  • Fixed some physics interaction bugs.
  • Increased number of walkable/teleportable surfaces (some might be a little awkward when large, but more fun and logical when small).
  • Hats can now be toggled out of existence via a button in the closet to improve performance, if desired, and are now honored with a suitable sign.
  • Ornaments can also be toggled out of existence to improve performance, by clicking on or grabbing the treetop star.
  • Pool Balls visibly sink into the table holes with a sound, and fixed a related Nighttime error.
  • Fixed Green Teeth on Kobold as part of a palette.
  • Restored missing Toilet Seat.
  • Fixed infinitely falling beans, which is a sentence you didn't expect to read today.
  • Timers changed to only display current second while active, but will show milliseconds on goal.
  • Kobold is now less indecisive about where to go after being repeatedly interacted with in a short time.
  • Simulator: Vertical Mouselook capped to avoid spinning your head vertically. View is now less likely to be tilted permanently after interacting with certain physics objects (such as the Microwave Plate).
  • New and Altered Easter Eggs. Some are hard to reach.
  • Updated Supporter List.
  • Kobold waves you farewell, for now~!

And now here's the extra notes for each version:

  • For the VR Version, if the hands seem to be pointing at an uncomfortable angle, try the Hand Rotation Fix option in the settings menu.
  • For the Simulator Version, read the Readme or check the in-game displays for the Hotkeys to change settings such as Field of View, Hand Movement Speed, etc. Be sure to cap the game's frame rate or enforce Vsync in your Graphics Card settings for the Simulator Version, because due to the workaround I'm using for the Simulator, frame rate won't be normally capped, and it will run as many frames as your PC can handle. This can impact things like the speed you can look around, and even physics interactions. If you notice the Kobold walking around with their arms drifting behind them, you're probably running at an uncapped frame rate.
  • For the Android (Meta Quest) Version, this has not been tested on a Quest 3, so there may potentially be unforeseen issues. I appreciate any bug reports unique to that version. if you've previously installed the App Lab version, you may need to delete it (and possibly reboot your Quest) to be able to sideload the Supporter version using SideQuest. The App Lab version does not contain the Supporter bonus, some small enhancements, or the most up-to-date credits, but it should mostly match the sideloaded version. I will see about getting the App Lab version updated after this release, but Meta introduced additional requirements that limited me from updating it at this time.

Keep following for future project news, and thanks for playing Cuddle Kobold: Just a Bite!
